Tortillas recipes are very easy to make and can be prepared in so many different ways. With all the flavor variations available nowadays, it can be hard to tell if you are supposed to treat your tortillas differently from your usual purchase.
Since I am usually using flour-based tortillas, I made the mistake of expecting all tortillas to last for a month. I decided to try homemade tortillas and just left it for about three weeks, planning to use them towards the end of the month, but unfortunately, I was too late for that.
Let me tell you what I have learned about tortillas so you won’t be making the same mistakes
I have made.

You can determine the shelf life of your tortillas by the basic ingredient it was made out of. Some ingredients tend to spoil faster compared to the others.
The way you store your tortillas also plays a huge role since refrigerating and freezing food can definitely slow down the spoilage of food, in different degrees. The way it was stored when you got in the grocery is also very significant.
If you found it in the fridge, then you should continue to store it in a fridge. Another important factor to consider is whether your tortillas pack is still sealed or not. Note that once a package has been opened, it gets exposed to air, therefore shortening its life span.

Unfortunately, regardless of what base you use to make your home made tortillas, it is only going to be good for a day or two, even in a sealed container. However, you have a way to vacuum seal it, then your home made tortillas may last for another couple of extra days.
You can also try to extend its shelf life up to a week by storing it in the fridge, or if you are willing to deep freeze it, then it can last up to around six to eight months.
Flour Tortillas
Tortillas based on flour are what I normally refer to as the regular tortillas, and will typically last about four to six weeks, in your cupboard or pantry as long as it hasn’t been opened yet.
It is best to keep them in a cool, dry place with no drastic change in temperature. Changes in temperature causes moisture to form, leading your tortillas to spoil faster, so if you found the tortillas in a fridge in the grocery store, make sure you will keep storing them in the fridge when you get home.
It can last up until the use by date if you will be storing it in the fridge unopened. You can also deep freeze flour tortillas and it may last up to eight months, regardless of the eat by date.
Spinach Tortillas
The Spinach tortillas is my go-to healthy option, since a simple change of tortillas gives me the wonderful benefits of spinach without too much effort. They can last up to six weeks as well, unopened. If you buy them from the rack, then storing them in room temperature would suffice, but it can also benefit from being stored in the fridge.
Whole Wheat Tortillas
These whole wheat tortillas are another healthy option. It is a good way of getting some
necessary fibers into your diet. They can also last from anywhere between four to six weeks,
or up until the eat-by-date. You have to consider that
manufacturers treat their food differently for longer shelf life so some just might last
longer than the others.

Corn Tortillas
Since corn is made out of starch, they tend to last longer than other ingredients. They can last from anywhere between six to eight weeks, usually lasting a couple of weeks longer than the others.
Important Considerations
- Any tortillas you find in the cold section must be stored in the fridge for as long as you are not ready to consume it yet. Changes in temperature will only cause moisture to form, and moisture encourages molds, resulting to spoilage even before the expiration date.
- Tortillas you find in the stacks can be stored in room temperature, but they will also benefit from being refrigerated. Just remember that once you begin keeping them in the fridge, you should keep them there until ready to be used.
- Freezing your tortillas can make it last up to eight months in the best conditions. This will basically disregard the expiration date, so use you will have to use your own judgement regarding their viability when the time comes to use them.
Eating tortillas beyond the expiration date, regardless of what it is made of, is up to your own discretion. While some would say you have some leeway before your food is totally spoiled, you should check it thoroughly to make sure it really is still good for consumption.
Any signs of spoilage; changes in smell, discoloration, mold spotting and whatever change you might notice should be taken seriously. If you notice anything amiss, throw it out. At the end of day, food poisoning is definitely not how you would want to end your dinner.
